Practice, practice, practice..
A total number of 16 children turned up in Reading Station, a few of them practice reading in front of a group, spend twenty minutes reading in small groups, and of course their favorite activity of all time; Games!
It is a continuous and conscious effort to keep encouraging the children to read in English. Nevertheless, there is progress and glad to see improvement! Kudos to all volunteers and children too who put in their time, effort and most importantly passion.

Encouragement.

Reading Station (RS) offers an opportunity for volunteers and children from different background, to encourage, bond, spending quality time and teaches values.
Lynette is one of our volunteer with RS for about a couple of months and has spent time with RS children, on most Sundays. Lynette shared her experience, with RS children.

“I was surprised that they don’t know simple word (in English), and very timid at first. A handful of them are more eager to improve and with encouragement there is improvement. I like seeing them improving”.  She also added that “arts and crafts is an activity that they enjoy”. She also shared “RS is an avenue for the children to practice and improve.”

Children from RS truly enjoy the opportunity given to them and they do their best as they can. When asked one of the children form RS, Arif age 12, about his experience with RS, he said “hashtag saya suka!” (hashtag I like!). Another child Siti Aminah age 10 said, “saya suka” (I like), and Nasrul (10) and Aaron (11) shared “rasa happy” (feel happy) :D.

Besides reading to them and cultivating the habit of reading, spending time with these children brings joy and creates a special bond. They feel important, motivated and happy. Every Sunday they always look forward for volunteers to meet them, share and have fun!

Come and join us! :D

Fun activities in Reading Station.

Children from Reading Station had so much fun with few of activities, such as pin the donkey while blind folded, writing and drawing using a marker pen with strings tied to it. These two activities was definitely a though one. But the children learnt, that the goal can be achieved through teamwork and co-ordination.

Collecting marbles using toes was really fun too. Using liquid hand wash to form suds so that the marbles are not visible, water and small basin with colored marbles in it. Each child took turns to collect one black/blue marble, to make a total of 10 (5 black/ 5 blue marbles) in a small bowl using only their toes!

Lastly before taking a group photo, our volunteer Angeline shared the lesson, learned from these activities; Teamwork! and rewards were given to each team member for good team work and effort.

Volcano Experiment, VR and a Show in Reading Station.
Our volunteer Angeline, together with her son Dillon, prepared a volcano model from home and brought it to RS, to share with the children, on how to make lava. Our volunteer, Angeline used very simple and safe items such as, dish washing liquid, food coloring, vinegar and baking soda to demonstrate further. Children were excited to try this experiment and were eager to learn too. Each child were given opportunity to try pouring the ingredient carefully into the volcano's crater with supervision.

Next, all 10 children, tried on the Virtual Reality (VR). VR is the use of computer technology to create a simulated environment. Some experienced it for the first time! Visuals they saw were dinosaurs and active volcano! They were thrilled and waited patiently for their turn to try on.

After which, Angeline using her laptop and projector, to share the definition and some facts about volcano. Soon after she introduced an interactive animated television series show called, Wallykazam. The series takes place in a colorful world resembling that of inside a fairy tale, in which the central characters reside. The show revolves around young troll Wally Trollman, who uses his magic stick to turn words into physical objects or occurrences, along with his pet dragon Norville and other friends. The duo occasionally runs into trouble, mostly caused by Bobgoblin. Children were amused with the funny characters and had so much fun listening and learning!
